Termites

Termites can come onto your property without you even realizing it. Even though these insects are extremely small, they are still able to cause a lot of damage to your home and other wooden structures on your property. If you think you may have termites around your home, early intervention is vital to minimizing damage.

At Peeler Environmental, we understand how challenging it can be to eliminate termites from your property. Our experienced Concord pest control specialists have spent years understanding the unique behaviors and habits of the termites commonly found in this area, and we have devised one of the most innovative termite elimination plans.

The Life Cycle Of A Termite Colony

Just like a termite in Concord, a termite colony will grow, evolve, and change over time. The colony starts when two swarmer termites, also known as alates, leave their current nest to find a mate. Once they mate, they will shed their wings and start a new colony. These two termites will be the queen and king and will be focussed on one task: reproducing in order to build a larger, highly-functioning colony of their own.

At first, the queen will be solely focused on laying eggs, and the king will be tasked with taking care of the young termites. Once the termite nymphs reach adulthood, they will go into one of three caste systems which include:

  • Worker: These termites usually comprise more than 90% of the colony. They have several jobs, including expanding the nest by making a tunnel system, foraging for food, and caring for the young termites.
  • Soldier: The soldier termites' only job is to defend their colony from predators, usually ants. This type of termite is unable to see, but what they lack in eyesight, they make up for with pure strength. They also have a large pair of mandibles protruding from their face, allowing them to easily kill their enemies.
  • Reproductive: The reproductive termites, also known as alates, have a pair of small wings on their backs. They are also known as swarmer termites because they commonly swarm during mating season in the spring and summer.

When a termite colony is matured, the alates will leave the nest in search of a new place to live. Each swarmer termite will find a mate and continue the cycle.

How To Identify Signs Of Termite Damage

Because termites are so small, you may not notice any damage to your home or outdoor buildings at first. However, over time the damage could become more prominent. Some of the things you may see if you have a termite infestation could include small holes around your home, bubbling or peeling paint, and brittle wood that crumbles when it is touched. If you notice any of these signs, or anything else unusual about the wooden elements on your property, you should have your home inspected for termites as soon as possible.

Removing Factors That Attract Termites

Termites are attracted to dead wood as well as moist and warm conditions. If you have dead tree limbs, old tree stumps, or any type of rotten wood in your yard, you should remove it as soon as possible. It is also a good idea to fix any moisture issues you may have around your home and make sure that all areas of your home are well-ventilated.
